The home of the Museum of Visual Materials is one of the oldest building in Downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota(1887). Even though we are the oldest building, we are the most advanced in GREEN environment efficient standards. Our building runs on Geo-Thermal heating and cooling, Solar panel energy, fast growing renewable resources such as cork and bamboo floors, and wheat cupboards. All of our plumbing and electric fixtures are high efficient and skylights have been added to the building to use more natural light. Our building has so much for the community to do.We have sewing machines for the community to use along with all of the fabrics, thread and buttons you would need to create whatever they would like for free. We have a state-of-the-art Commercial kitchen which will be used for cooking demonstrations and hall rentals. A sound proof listening room so people can enjoy 1 of 1000's of records or 8-tracks that we have on hand. Over 4,500 books so people can sit and enjoy reading all types of subjects such as cooking, religions, science, gardening, children's, fantasy, and the arts. We have a special brew of coffee that people can enjoy for free while relaxing and using our free Wi-Fi. You can also learn more about how this private collection came to be and understand how a hand made clock that runs on the Earth's gravity functions.
There is so much to do at the Museum of Visual Materials(MoVM) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We offer a unique museum experience in many different senses, five to be exact. The MoVM is a hands on experience where you will learn by your sense of touch, smell, hearing, taste and of course sight. The MoVM gives you the chance to experiences things like no other museum with all of the materials and facilities for you to expand your horizons for free. It's so different; you might forget you're in a museum!
November 7th through January 2nd- Friday The Museum of Visual Materials is hosting the creative black and white photography of Tom Jones of Madison, South Dakota. Professor Jones has inspired many future photographers with his skills and techniques. The experience of his photography takes you into a relaxing contrast of the real world while some of his other works take you to a transition of an unknown abstract dimension. Tom Jones' works will be displayed at the museum until the end of December. The meet and greet artist reception will be held on the First Friday, November 7th at 5:30-7:30.
